As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders we have cultural stories and practices being taught in traditional ways in person, which can be a great experience but as time moves and the digital world expands, there can be opportunities to explore how stories and practices evolve with digital storytelling and capturing.

Capturing knowledges and stories services

Capturing knowledges and stories is a service with the option of mentoring for how we can better implement and create digital vessels of knowledges and stories of Aboriginal culture and heritage. The mentoring provides digital lessons for individuals or groups for community controlled ownership and archiving of our own stories in the community.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history shows the importance of capturing stories through art, practice, lessons, and design. Colonisation in Australia had a devastating impact on the ongoing collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and stories. The use of digital methods today can help build the puzzle pieces back together as the continuance of practices, regeneration of language, art, cultural practices and stories continues to develop and be taught.

The Capturing knowledges and stories mentorship is a walk alongside digital media upskilling and real time digital solutions orientated program for individuals and groups.

Capturing knowledges and stories is about giving self determination to the individual creative with providing skills to capture their own story and or knowledge via a series of walk alongside consultations and mentorship by Wojamin Creative. The program provides digital learnings that will help capture content via contemporary forms informed by their stories and or knowledge.

As we are aware of the current legal system that copyright laws are not yet up to date with cultural mediums and ownership of the content - a lot of the time this copyright and or medium created automatically goes to the government or organisations skilled and funded to conduct the capturing and storage. This project will skill community members to have individual and community controlled ownership of archiving their own stories in the community - what they digitally create is theirs to keep and distribute.

The below shows how the mentoring and workshops will develop

Mentoring phase one
Attending the workshop where the story or knowledge is being taught. Wojamin creative will assess opportunities of how best to approach the creative's mentorship.

Mentoring phase two
Placing pen to paper and developing ideas into possible solutions for the best ways to capture digitally.

Mentoring phase three
Wojamin Creative helps and assists in developing the idea into a digital format alongside the creative/creatives who learns about digital mediums and designing their own method of digital solution and or product.

The following protocols will be followed:
- respect for Elders in decision-making processes
